Something Sacred
02:34
|
|||
I knew a man who voted for the red coats
When I asked him why he didn’t know
“But I love my God,” he said, “and I love my country
“And its what my papa said that I should do”
Now ain’t there something wrong with that to you?
I asked the man what is it he believed in
He said, “ I don’t know enough to know
“But I know my people are defending something sacred
“And so I’ll stand by them until the end
Now ain’t there something wrong with that my friend?
I asked the man if he had read the Bible
He told me he’d read enough to know
That what he sees on cable news is undeniably the truth
And how it was is how it ought to be
Man, there’s something wrong with that to me
I’ve seen my friends lying on the ground
Under crosses red, white, and blue
I’ve heard cries echo silent in the night
But we all tune them out
No more questions, no more doubt
The man he asked me, “do you love your country?
I said yes, but sometimes I don’t know
I think that we can make it something sacred
And I love it most for all that it could be
He said, “somethings wrong with that to me”

All I Know
04:20
|
|||
I have known a lot of men
Broken by the hour glass
Waiting for the glory train
But the devil came too fast
I have known some laborers
When they heard the world would end
They began to dance for joy
Since they’d never had the chance
All I know
Is that one-day we’ll die
With no excuse
Without an alibi
I have known a couple women
So afraid they might be real
That they mask their beauty
Under makeup and high heels
I have known a couple men
So afraid of what they feel
That they wear testosterone
As their governing ideal
All I know
Is as the years go by
We don’t grow up
We just grow old but never wise
I have heard Beethoven’s ninth
In a crowd of billionaires
While a homeless man was sleeping
On the symphony hall stairs
I have known a lovely pastor
Sang the Gospel’s peaceful words
Then proposed that immigrants
Should be kept out by the sword
All I know
Are facts that I recall
From cable news
And drug commercials
I have known a politician
He said, “I will make you free
“If you pay for my campaign
“And denounce your privacy”
And I heard an angry man
Yelling words by Karl Marx
While he smoked a Marlboro Red
With the children in the park
All I know
These revolutions change
But past the fall
Everything that they build remains the same
Tone poems on a plastic beach
Cum stains on a perfumed sheet
Hookers singing Nat King Cole
While they’re pimped out in the street
Rose buds and lily pads
Growing from nuclear waste
Thirteen hundred best of friends
That we won’t meet face to face
All I know
I learned from the internet
Through Facebook posts
By lonely misogynists
I had once known ignorance
Til the day I began to read
And discovered all I learned
Just remained a mystery
I had once known happiness
‘Til the world took hold of me
Put a bag around my head
And told me to try and breath
All I know
Is that nothing is real
Except for this
Little moment we have right here
